about us

FORMEM – Portuguese Federation for Vocational Training and Employment of Persons with Disabilities – is a non-governmental organisation for persons with disabilities, registered under number 38/2014 with the National Institute for Rehabilitation. Established in 1991, FORMEM currently represents 50 private organisations, from across Portugal that develop vocational training and employment initiatives aimed at persons with disabilities.

Based in Coimbra, this federative structure is composed of organisations working in the fields of vocational training and employment for persons with disabilities. Its objectives are to promote more effective intervention by public and private bodies responsible for vocational training and employment policies and measures; strengthen the capacity of organisations and professionals supporting vocational qualification and socio-professional inclusion; and promote policies and practices that foster socio-professional inclusion.

FORMEM has been continuously reflecting on the following issues in the field of disability:

– Vocational training;
– Employment;
– Vocational Assessment and Guidance;
– Organisational culture;
– Quality management;
– Quality of life.

FORMEM also carries out a range of activities for and with its member organisations, including:

– Up-to-date information;
– Promotion of members’ work and achievements;
– Training in various fields;
– Organisation of working seminars and conferences;
– National and international exchanges;
– Annual gatherings of persons with disabilities.

FORMEM’s mission will be fulfilled when every person, regardless of the type of disability they may have, can find, close to their place of residence, the resources necessary to enjoy a high quality of life and active participation in society; within a community where their strengths are recognised and valued, where their limitations do not negatively affect their lifestyle, and where specialised organisations provide sustainable support through a continuous commitment to excellence.
